Ling 470-2:
Semantic Analysis II

General Information

Course Description: This course continues the Semantics sequence, building on 470-1. The main focus is on the linguistic motivation and model-theoretic fundamentals of intensional logic as applied in semantic analysis. Topics include modal and temporal logics, their application in the analysis of modality, tense and aspect, conditionals, opacity and de dicto versus de re readings. We will extend the formal apparatus introduced in 470-1 with the tools necessary for the analysis of these phenomena. Toward the end of the quarter, we will turn to more recent developments in the analysis of phenomena at the ever-shifting semantics/pragmatics boundary, such as Discourse Representation Theory and models of the dynamics of belief change.

Prerequisites: Ling 470-1 or permission of the instructor.

Teaching method: Lectures, discussion.

Evaluation: Weekly exercises and/or critical discussions of readings, depending on the topic of the week (80%); short paper at the end (20%). Paper topics must be discussed with me and approved by Friday, May 18; papers are due on Monday, June 4, by 5:00pm in my office. As a rule, assignments will be handed out on Thursdays and are due back in class on the following Tuesday. Late assignments will not be accepted, except for documented medical emergencies or if permission of the instructor has been obtained before the assignment was handed out.

Readings: There is no textbook. We will read excerpts from books and original papers. The readings will be made available near the copier in the Linguistics Department.
